Water Poppy (Hydrocleys nymphoides)

Zones 9–11

Water poppy is a tender perennial grown as an annual in areas where it is not hardy. The plants have abundant, glossy green leaves and yellow, 2-inch-wide flowers with papery petals held just above the water. Grow water poppy in full sun to light shade in shallow water with 6 to 12 inches of water over the crowns. Caution: Water poppy can become invasive in warm climates.

Whorled Loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata)

Zones 5–9

No, this isn’t the nasty loosestrife, this is the well-behaved loosestrife — well, sort of. Whorled loosestrife is a tall perennial with straight stalks reaching up to 4 feet tall. Medium green leaves cover the stem, and in summer whorls of yellow flowers, each dotted with a reddish eye, appear. Whorled loosestrife is vigorous and should be contained within a pot to restrict its spread. It prefers a location in full sun to partial shade and thrives in conditions ranging from wet soil to standing water up to 2 inches above the top of the pot. An excellent variety that is less vigorous than the species is ‘Alexander’, which has green leaves rimmed with white and yellow flowers.
